Dorian “Doc” Paskowitz was a Stanford-educated physician, surfing pioneer, and nomadic family patriarch. He may well have invented modern southern California van life long before Instagram made it a trend.
From Doctor to Adventure Camper Van Life Pioneer
In the 1950s, Doc had it all: a thriving medical practice, an enviable life in Hawaii, and professional success. But the pressures of work stole his joy. “My spirit shrank until there was nothing left,” he later reflected. In response, he turned his back on stability, embracing adventure camper van life by quitting medicine, packing his surfboard, and heading out on the open road in a small campervan.
Nomadic Surfing Family
With his third wife Juliette, he raised their nine children not in suburban homes, but on the moveable while surfing daily along California’s coast. Their rig? A succession of used campervans that became the original blueprint for southern California van life. Doc’s philosophy was simple: health, surfing, nature, and family came before formal education .
Their morning routine: gruel for breakfast, followed by waves and full-throttle adventure camper van life. Their playground? The Pacific—from San Onofre to San Clemente—as they lived and learned on the move.
Inventing the Van Life Aesthetic
They weren’t chasing likes but rather they were creating a life. No filters, no followers—just sun, surf, and togetherness. This authentic southern California van life predated the digital age. Doc’s kids remember a childhood that doubled as a surf school and life workshop:
“Surfing was our jungle gym!”
The camper was more than transportation—it was home, classroom, and community hub.
Spreading the Gospel of Surf & Health
Doc didn’t just ride waves, he evangelized them. He founded the Paskowitz Surf Camp in San Clemente in 1972, built on the principles of adventure camper van life, fitness, and family. He also introduced surfing to Israel and launched “Surfing For Peace,” cementing his legacy as a global surf ambassador .
Even into his 90s, he surfed with vitality, writing health columns and preaching that southern California van life was more than a movement—it was medicine.
Legacy: The Original Van Lifer
Doc passed away in 2014 at age 93, but his blueprint for adventure camper van life lives on. Through his children, surf camps, and the cult-classic documentary Surfwise, he shaped a generation’s vision of freedom .
His impact? Today’s van lifers owe more than a hashtag to Doc: he handed them a way of living that blends family, surf, health, and wanderlust—the true father of southern California van life.
